In a survey that’s just been released by YouGov, a slight majority of republicans now support the legalization of cannabis.

The results show that 45% of republicans believe cannabis should be legalized, 42% say it should not, and 13% said that they were not sure. This marks a major shift in the perception of cannabis by the American public.

In addition, republicans favor a hands off aproach by the federal government in states where cannabis has been legalized. 48% percent of republicans say the federal government should not try to enforce federal cannabis laws in those states, 31% say it should, and 21% reported not being sure.

Greater numbers of independents and democrats favor legalization, which follows the same trend visible in American politics for the last several decades.
